Record card 1258 covers a necklace with a half-moon pendant. The commercial name is the whole of the surviving description, and in a catalogue of this kind that is normal: a pendant shape and a metal tone were all a shop needed to list a piece at this price.
How a piece like this is made
A flat pendant of this kind is stamped from sheet brass or zamak in a single operation, then plated. The chain is bought by the metre and cut to length, and the clasp is a standard part. Three components, no setting, no soldering beyond the jump rings. That is why a necklace can be sold for a few euros and still look considered.
The finish decides everything about how it wears. A brushed pale gold plating hides the first scratches better than a mirror finish, which is one reason it dominated the low bracket for several seasons. What it cannot hide is the point where the chain meets the pendant, because the two rub against each other every time the necklace moves.
Why the crescent shape spread
Because it reads at a distance and costs nothing extra to produce. A flat geometric pendant needs one die; a figurative one needs several operations and hand finishing. When a shape can be stamped in one pass, it appears in every catalogue in the bracket within a season, and the crescent was the clearest example of that in its period.
What the price bracket allows
Under ten euros: plated brass or zamak, textile or base-metal chain, alloy clasp. Plating life is somewhere between a few months and two years of frequent wear, and it goes first at the clasp and at the jump rings. None of that is a fault; it is the material doing what it does at that cost.
Storing and conserving
Dry, flat and separated from other pieces, because chains scratch each other and tangle. Away from perfume, hairspray and hand cream, which attack plating faster than wear does. If the piece has been worn, wipe it with a dry cloth the same day rather than at the end of the week.
If the plating has already worn through to the base metal, leave it. Replating over oxidised brass gives a worse result than the worn original, and polishing removes whatever finish is left. A clasp or a jump ring, on the other hand, can be replaced without altering the piece at all.

Chain gauge and pendant scale. Fine chains with a single medium pendant belong to the later part of the range; heavier chains with large volumes came before. The brushed rather than mirror finish narrows it further, as does the small alloy lobster clasp, which replaced the older spring ring at a fairly identifiable point.

Can this piece be bought?
No. The archive documents the catalogue of a label that no longer trades, and no record card is an offer of sale. What is kept is the reference, the commercial name and what can be said with justification about the type of piece.
Will a plated necklace turn my skin green?
It can, once the plating wears through. The green mark is copper from the base alloy reacting with sweat, and it is harmless but persistent. It is a signal that the finish has gone and the piece has reached the end of its wearing life, whatever it looks like from the front.
Is zamak worse than brass?
Not for this use. Zamak is a zinc alloy that casts finer detail than brass and costs less, but it is more brittle, so a thin zamak part snaps where brass would bend. In a flat stamped pendant the difference is negligible; in a hinge or a thin ring it matters.
Why is the description so short?
Because that is what the catalogue carried. Shops in this bracket listed a name, a tone and a price, and nothing else. The archive keeps the short description rather than extending it with detail that would sound right but could not be supported.
